Taking Measurements for Boy's Suits.


Step 1
Use a measuring device that's malleable but not stretchable. Check your sewing basket for a tape measure or pick one up at a sewing or craft store.

Step 2
Measure the boy with his undergarments in place. Pull the tape measure tight without indenting or pulling it too taut. Inaccurate measurements cause ill-fitting suits.


Step 3
Take jacket measurements for the chest, sleeve length and jacket length. Record the chest size by measuring around the boy's torso directly beneath his armpits. Measure sleeve length from the top of the shoulder to approximately an inch past the wrist bone. Find the jacket length with a reading from the middle of neck down the spine to the hips.

Step 4
Get the pants measurements, consisting of waist, hip and length measurements, if you're buying the pants separately or need alterations. Measure the waist around the trunk over the belly button. Wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of the derriere for the hip measurements. Determine pants length by measuring the distance between the waist and anklebone.

Taking Measurements for Girl's Dresses

Step 1
Have the little angel stand with arms relaxed at her sides in undergarments or fitted clothing.

Step 2
Measure SHOULDERS by placing the tape measure across her upper back from shoulder to shoulder. Make sure that the tape measure is laying flat against her back.

Step 3
Measure CHEST by wrapping the tape measure straight across the top of the bust and widest part of back to form a completed circle. This is the most important measurement of the dress.

Step 4
Measure WAIST by placing the tape measure 1-2 inches above the navel and forming a completed circle.

Step 5
Measure HIPS by placing the largest part of hips, which is found approximately 8 inches below the waistline.

Step 6
Now compare the measurements to the dress you'd like to buy. When in doubt go with the chest size, which makes the dress most comfortable and the zipper close easily.
 
Taking Measurements for Children's Shoes.

Step 1
Get your child to sit comfortably and rest his/hers foot on your lap. For best results when measuring feet for shoe sizes it is recommended that your child leaves their socks on.
 
Step 2
Measure the bottom of the foot from the tip of the big toe, down to the bottom of the heel.
 
Step 3
Use the following table to convert the measurements (in inches) to the corresponding shoe size.
